TfL provides update on London rail developments | Rail Technology Magazine

Transport for London (TfL) has published its Commissioner’s report for June 2024, providing an update on the latest major developments to the city’s key transport networks.

The report provides an overview of several key projects affecting the Overground, Underground and DLR.

DLR rolling stock replacement programme

30 new DLR trains have been built and are at various stages of testing, ahead of the introduction of the first train into service later this year.

TfL has experienced some “challenges” throughout the integrated testing phase, but will continue to work with suppliers and the operators to mitigate these.

Meanwhile, work is progressing at Beckton Depot to construct new sidings, which are expected to be completed this summer. Power works on three routes of the DLR, which will enable the new fleet to operate, have already been completed.

Thamesmead DLR consultation

TfL conducted a public consultation on the proposed extension of the DLR from Gallions Reach to Beckton Riverside and Thamesmead. The consultation received 1283 responses, 29 from stakeholder groups and 1254 from members of the public. A poll of local people was undertaken separately.

The responses are currently being studied, but TfL reports that early analysis points to generally positive feedback. The full results of the consultation will be published later this summer.

Beckton Riverside and Thamesmead are two areas within the Thames Estuary Growth Corridor critical to meeting London’s housing needs and supporting economic growth, with the potential of up to 30,000 new homes across the two sites.

This would, however, only be possible with improved transport connections, such as the extension of the DLR.

Piccadilly Line upgrade

The first two fully-assembled trains are at Siemens’ test and validation centre in Germany, where they are undergoing a comprehensive programme of trials. The vehicles remain on target to undergo their first test in London this summer.

Meanwhile, infrastructure works are continuing along the Piccadilly line in preparation for the new trains. Three new stablings and reversing sidings at Northfields are almost complete, with final commissioning expected this autumn.

East London line enhancements

A series of improvements to the East London line on the Overground is underway, in a development that will boost train frequency and support growth and regeneration in the local area.

Platforms 1 and 2 at Surrey Quays station are both undergoing work to their superstructure, which is expected to be completed by 2026.
