London is getting 15 more red light cameras at most major intersections | CBC News
The City of London is more than doubling the number of red light cameras at major intersections to crack down on collisions.
An additional 15 new cameras are currently being installed in intersections across the city, bringing the total number up to 25, the city said Tuesday.
The fine for running a red, and being captured on camera, is $325, which includes a $60 victim surcharge that goes toward funding programs for people impacted by crime. Between one and five drivers in London are issued a ticket every day at each intersection with a camera.
“Red Light Cameras help reduce severe collisions at signalized intersections,” said Doug MacRae, the director of Transportation and Mobility for the City of London.
“Automated enforcement programs, when implemented in combination with other traffic safety measures, are essential tools in creating safer mobility conditions in London.”
London installed its first red light cameras in 2017, and the city said the number of collisions in intersections has dropped by approximately 10 per cent. There were 507 collisions involving drivers running red lights in London in 2023.
Pays for itself
The cost of operating the new red light cameras for one year is approximately $1 million, MacRae said, but notes that they pay for themselves through the fines issued.
“Our goal is to issue zero infractions and to make this program a money loser and redundant. But for now, it pays for itself,” he said.
Council approved the additional red light cameras last year.
