One person was killed after a vehicle struck a tree east of London, Ontario Provincial Police say.

Emergency crews responded Sunday just before 8:30 p.m. to a single-vehicle crash on Catherine Street between Shaw Road and Westchester Bourne in Thames Centre. The driver was taken to hospital and later pronounced dead, Middlesex OPP said.

Investigators determined a vehicle left the road and struck a tree, police said. Police closed a section of Catherine Street for several hours, but the road has since been reopened.

Police probe transport truck thefts

Several thefts reported from transport truck marshalling yards in Sarnia this month are believed to be connected, city police say.

Sarnia police said they’re investigating three thefts that took place between June 8 and 10 in the city.

“Operators of commercial motor vehicles are asked to increase security measures around their facilities,” police said in a statement. “Members of the public are asked to call if they observe any suspicious behaviour around these facilities.”

Police said 25 trailers were broken into June 8 in the area of Ube Drive and a 2019 Kenworth T680 truck was stolen.

The truck was also hooked up to two separate trailers, which were also stolen from the marshalling yard at separate times, and it was later found in the Halton Region on the west side of the Greater Toronto Area.

The second incident happened June 9 when a suspect, described by police as an East Indian male who was wearing a white surgical mask, was seen near a trailer in the area of the 6000 block of Telfer Road.

A customs seal had been cut off of the trailer and a pallet inside had been opened, police said. A driver with the company saw the suspect, who fled in a white Mercedes sedan.

Some time between June 8 and June 10, a third incident happened in the 1000 block of Prescott Drive, where a white 2016 Volvo truck was stolen, police said. At the time, it had an Ontario licence plate BX89 131.

Police are asking anyone with information about the incidents to contact Det.-Const. Zachary Douglas at 519-344-8861, ext. 6247.
