Japan House London Welcomes His Majesty the Emperor of Japan
Japan House London proudly hosted His Majesty the Emperor of Japan at its cultural venue on Kensington High Street, marking a significant event ahead of the official start of his state visit to the UK.
The day following Japan House London’s sixth anniversary, Director General & CEO Sam Thorne provided His Majesty with a private tour of the current exhibition, the Shop, and displays of Japanese regional crafts.
The tour began with a collection of woodcraft items crafted by skilled artisans using cedar and beech from Akita Prefecture. His Majesty also explored products in the Shop sourced from Ishikawa Prefecture, an area affected by an earthquake.
Descending the iconic steel spiral staircase, handmade in Japan, the Emperor proceeded to the gallery to view the current exhibition, “Design Discoveries: Towards a DESIGN MUSEUM JAPAN.” This exhibition highlights Japan’s outstanding design through the perspectives of the country’s top creators, including filmmakers, architects, and fashion designers, each showcasing their chosen ‘design treasure’.
Director General & CEO Sam Thorne remarked, “We are deeply honoured to have hosted His Majesty during his state visit to the UK. His visit underscores the importance of Japan House London as the cultural home of Japan in the UK. It is a privilege to celebrate and explore the rich cultural heritage and contemporary dynamism of Japan.”
