Which London borough has the highest delivery driver salary? – London Business News | Londonlovesbusiness.com
According to Indeed the average delivery driver salary in the UK is £12.38/hour and since the increase in e-commerce activity following the pandemic positions have been in hot demand. Solutions like route optimisation software and driver telematics can make the life of a delivery driver easier, but there are a number of challenges that the profession is exposed to including extreme weather conditions, time pressures and traffic issues.
London as a city comes with its own unique challenges including the congestion charge, heavy pedestrian traffic and limited parking opportunities which all have an impact on driver well-being. With this context, we have put together the dataset below which explores which borough of London has the highest average delivery driver salary and if this will potentially be improved by the rise in the minimum wage in April.
From the analysis, Camden emerged as the borough with the highest average salary of £43,405 per year according to Indeed with areas like Richmond upon Thames and Croydon being the lowest. Waltham Forest and Havering are included within the dataset but only include part time salaries reported.
The data from Indeed analysed the hourly, weekly, monthly and yearly pay for ‘delivery drivers’ within the various boroughs of London. Also included is the number of reported salaries (1,054 in total) to illustrate reliability given the large disparity in reporting rates between the different boroughs.
The national living wage rise will support delivery drivers
Looking at the increase in the national living wage due to come in for the new tax year, this will be set to increase the hourly wages of many workers according to Indeed with the bottom 13 boroughs all reporting hourly rates below the increased threshold to £11.44. It should be noted that this does not take into account workers who may be under the age at which you qualify for the national living wage.
Top 5 London boroughs:
Looking at some of the highest reported salaries these included some areas with lots of submissions including 54 within Kingston upon Thames but also some with fewer submissions like Merton which had 4 reported salaries.
Bottom 5 London boroughs:
In terms of the London boroughs with the lowest average salary these include some areas with few reported salaries (Richmond upon Thames reported 3) but also reliable data points like Harrow and Croydon which had 66 and 183 reported salaries respectively.
How you can support delivery drivers in the new tax year
Delivery drivers are the backbone of the industry, ensuring goods reach customers on time, however their roles can be demanding, particularly in high traffic areas like London. Companies can take steps to improve driver well-being and boost morale.
One key area for support is route optimisation. Instead of relying on guesswork, utilise route planning software. This software factors in traffic patterns, delivery locations, and even weather conditions to create efficient routes. With fewer miles driven and less time wasted, drivers can make more deliveries and experience reduced stress.
Financial security is another concern. Competitive pay and benefits packages are essential. Companies can go a step further by offering gas subsidies or partnerships with repair shops to ease the burden of vehicle maintenance. By valuing their drivers, companies can foster a loyal and productive workforce.
