London Underground severe delays and rest of UK facing snow problems

The morning rush hour hasn’t got off to a great start in London with delays and suspensions across six Underground lines.

The London Overground is facing severe delays after a points failure, while the Northern line is part suspended after an ‘earlier customer incident’.

The District, Jubilee, Metropolitan and Piccadilly lines are also all experiencing minor delays.

On the roads, the M6 is blocked after a vehicle fire which spilled diesel across the carriageway – that’s causing 90-minute delays for drivers.

Meanwhile, commuters are facing a second day of disruption on the rails and roads this morning as weather warnings for snow and ice cover vast swathes of the UK.

Yesterday saw dozens of train services cancelled, delayed or revised as icy tracks and flooding blocked railway lines, along with the weather leading to school closures.

The disruption is expected to last all day, and services could be cancelled or revised.

It’s impacting Great Western Railway services, who say: ‘When a train is cancelled Great Western Railway will try and get the next train to call additionally at the stations the cancelled service was supposed to call at.

‘Please speak to the guard of your train if you require further assistance or use the station help points.’

These are the affected routes:

  • Avanti West Coast services to / from London Euston
  • London Northwestern Railway services to / from London Euston

M6 diversion route as drivers face 90-minute delays

The situation is getting worse on the M6, with drivers experiencing delays of an hour and a half.

The fire service and traffic officers are still on scene to tackle the vehicle fire and clean up the large diesel spillage.

  • At M6 Junction 14 take the exit to A34 northbound
  • Continue along A34 northbound to it’s junction with A500 at Hanford

A railway bridge in Cambridgeshire has been named Britain’s ‘most bashed’ bridge.

The bridge in Stuntney Road, Ely, was hit by vehicles 18 times in 2023-24, Network Rail says.

They say 1,532 bridge strikes in total were reported in the year to April, costing an estimated £20million in delays, cancellations and repairs.

Passenger train services were delayed by the equivalent of more than 100 days due to lorries hitting bridges in the same period, the BBC reports.

Full impact of snow and ice on Tuesday

Tuesday saw widespread disruption across the UK, with more than 200 school closures reported by the afternoon.

Snowfall was also widely reported, with 12cm of lying snow recorded at Watnall, Nottinghamshire, on Tuesday morning as an Arctic airmass influenced the UK’s weather.

The Met Office said the coldest temperature was recorded at Braemar village in Aberdeenshire, Scotland, with the mercury falling to -11.2°C on Tuesday.

Thousands of train passengers suffered disruption on Tuesday morning and a Stagecoach bus in Aberdeenshire toppled onto its side with a passenger on board in icy conditions.

Snow and ice could impact train services all morning

National Rail says it expects snow and ice across the UK will impact the rail network throughout the morning.

The six Met Office yellow warnings cover all of Northern Ireland, most of Wales, north and west Scotland, and the east coast, central and southern England.

Right now, trains between Llandudno and Blaenau Ffestiniog have been suspended and replaced with buses on the Transport for Wales network.

They explain how snow and ice can affect the railways:

  • Snow built up on the tracks can block points (the equipment that allows trains to move between tracks)
  • Ice can coat the overhead power cables, preventing trains from drawing the power they need to run and leaving them stranded
  • Icicles on tunnels, bridges and other structures can also damage trains and overhead power cables
  • Where snow lies deeper than 30cm, trains can’t run safely unless they have been fitted with snow ploughs
