London Fashion Week leads the way with historic ban on exotic animal skins starting 2025

London Fashion Week will be the first major fashion event to ban exotic animal skins beginning in 2025, marking a watershed moment. Designers displaying their collections will be expected to avoid using skins from creatures like crocodiles, alligators, and snakes, creating an important precedent in the fashion business.

The ban on exotic animal skins was announced in a speech to parliament this week

David Leigh-Pemberton, the British Fashion Council’s Deputy Director for Policy and Engagement, announced the ban on exotic animal skins in a speech to parliament this week. This measure expands on the BFC’s prior commitment to eliminating fur, expressed by CEO Caroline Rush in 2018 and legally adopted in December 2023.

London has established itself as a leader in sustainable fashion techniques among the “big four” fashion weeks: New York, London, Milan, and Paris. It was the first to outlaw fur and is currently the first to prohibit exotic animal skins.

This progressive step links London with smaller but more prominent events such as Melbourne and Copenhagen Fashion Weeks, both of which have implemented similar restrictions.

Designers might face some issues

London Fashion Week, which is strongly inspired by emerging designers, may find it simpler to execute the ban on exotic animal skins because the principal users of such materials are frequently leather goods powerhouses, according to The Business of Fashion.

Feathers, on the other hand, pose a more challenging task because they are regularly utilized as trim on clothes, making distinguishing between real and fake feathers difficult. In reality, in 2023, merchants such as Boohoo and Selfridges were discovered to have mislabeled genuine feathers as faux.

According to a press statement from the British Fashion Council, this prohibition is part of a larger movement spearheaded by the Institute of Positive Fashion. This program aims to promote social, environmental, and sustainability norms in the fashion business, harmonizing with changing attitudes in London’s fashion scene.
