The new EU High Representative of Foreign Affairs and Security Policy will “not rule out” sending foreign troops to Ukraine.

Kaja Kallas said she believes that Europe can play a key role in Ukraine and she is ready to build bridges with the new US administration.

Kallas said, “So far, the discussion has centered on which countries are ready to send soldiers to Ukraine and which are not.

“I believe that nothing can be ruled out and a certain strategic ambiguity should be maintained in this matter.”

The new EU High Representative said that Europe could “play a role” if there is a ceasefire to send troops to Ukraine as observers, “in any case, the choice in this regard remains with Ukraine,” Kallas added.

Kallas said she is already building bridges with what will be the Trump administration on 20 January 2025.

She said, “But when I hear reports from member states that have had talks with the Trump administration… they no longer say that ending this war is easy.

“Maybe we should ask ourselves if the ceasefire is useful to the Russians so that they don’t give up their goals. Because Ukraine is having a hard time right now, but we are overestimating Moscow: their economy has entered a difficult phase – sanctions, deficits, inflation and a shortage of personnel.”

She warned that should Putin win the war in Ukraine this will then strengthen Iran, China and North Korea.

Last month Le Monde reported the British Prime Minister and French President reignited the conversation of sending British and French troops to Ukraine amid Donald Trump’s victory in the US.

The British Foreign Secretary David Lammy has said that the UK will not send UK troops to Ukraine, despite Keir Starmer meeting with the French President Emmanuel Macron to discuss the option.

Lammy was asked over the Le Monde report of sending British troops to Ukraine, he said, “We are very clear that we stand ready and continue to support the Ukrainians with training particularly, but there has been a longstanding position that we are not committing UK troops to the theatre of action,” he told reporters at the G7 meeting in Italy.

“That is certainly the UK position and remains the UK position at this time.”

Last month a British Army General has told MPs they are ready to “fight tonight” should war in Europe break out.

The deputy chief of the British Defence staff, Lieutenant General Rob Magowan told the House of Commons defence committee, “If the British Army was asked to fight tonight, it would fight tonight.

“I don’t think anybody in this room should be under any illusion that if the Russians invaded Eastern Europe tonight, then we would meet them in that fight.”
