Major route to Gatwick Airport has long delays after vehicle fire

Lanes 1 and 2 (of 3) remain closed on the M1 this afternoon northbound between junction 16 for Weedon Bec and junction 17 for Kilsby and Rugby for ongoing barrier repairs.

There is now 6.5 miles of congestion on approach, causing delays of 75 minutes above usual journey times.

The M23 is now closed southbound between junction 8 for the M25 and junction 9 for Gatwick Airport.

This is for emergency carriageway resurfacing works following the earlier vehicle fire.

It is impacting drivers heading to the airport.

The emergency services are dealing with an incident between Staines and Feltham meaning all lines are blocked.

As a result, trains may be cancelled or delayed by up to 45 minutes.

This is expected until 6pm.

Routes impacted include between Reading/Aldershot/Windsor & Eton Riverside/Weybridge and London Waterloo.

There is a trespasser on the railway near Littlehampton which has blocked all lines running in and out of the station.

All trains have had to be stopped because it’s not safe to run services past the person.

The emergency services and Network Rail are trying to remove them.

Southern trains which would have run to or from Littlehampton are being cancelled, delayed or potentially revised.

Delays caused by a signalling fault near Wigston Junction have been upgraded to ‘major disruption’ by National Rail.

Trains running between Leicester and Kettering / South Wigston are facing delays of up to an hour, cancellations or revisions.

The disruption is expected to last into rush hour, until about 5.30pm.

A National Rail spokesperson said: ‘Trains running through the area in both directions between Leicester and Kettering cannot run.

‘Where possible, East Midlands Railway are diverting their services around the problem.

‘If they are able to take the diversionary route, services will not be able to call at Market Harborough.

‘Please be aware this may add an additional 35-40 minutes to your journey.’

Two lanes are closed on the M1 northbound after a crash earlier this morning which caused a lorry to overturn.

One lane is still open northbound between junction 16 for Weedon Bec and 17 for Kilsby and Rugby.

Work is still ongoing to repair the nearside barrier after the earlier crash.

Drivers are facing half-hour queues with four miles of congestion on the approach.

All lines are blocked between Leicester and Kettering / South Wigston after a signal fault was found near Wigston Junction.

Network Rail are investigating the problem but in the meantime all lines in the area are blocked.

Trains are facing hour-long delays or cancellations.

It’s impacting the following services:

• CrossCountry between Stansted Airport / Cambridge / Leicester and Birmingham New Street
• East Midlands Railway between Grimsby Town / Lincoln and Leicester
• East Midlands Railway between Sheffield / Nottingham and London St Pancras International

A vehicle has crashed into a bridge between Leeds and Burley Park, which is disrupting journeys between Horsforth and Leeds.

Trains could be delayed by half an hour or revised.

This is impacting Northern services running between the two stations, however services running between Leeds and York via Garforth are unaffected.

A broken down train between Peterborough and Stamford means the line towards Birmingham is blocked.

As a result, trains running between theses stations may be cancelled or delayed by up to 30 minutes.

It’s impacting CrossCountry services between Stansted Airport or Cambridge and Birmingham New Street.

The disruption is expected to last until about 3pm.

A passenger has taken ill at Old Street, which means trains can’t stop there at the moment.

Trains are being cancelled or running noon-stop between Essex Road and Moorgate.

This is impacting Great Northern services which run through Old Street.

The disruption is expected to last until about 1pm.

The Piccadilly line is still partially closed between Rayners Lane and Uxbridge because of leaves causing dangerous rail conditions.

There are also still minor Jubilee line delays while faulty tunnel ventilation is fixed.

Otherwise, there is good service on all other lines.

The M25 has now reopened anticlockwise between junction 28 for Brentwood and 27 for the M11.

However drivers are being warned that six miles of congestion on the approach are causing hour-long delays.

There’s been a two-car crash and the emergency services are at the scene.

Drivers are facing 45-minute delays in the area, with five miles of queues already building on the approach.

Following a vehicle fire we covered earlier, there are still two lanes closed on the M23 southbound between junction 8 for the M25 and 9 for Gatwick Airport.

National Highways are still cleaning up and making repairs to the road surface.

There have been several crashes on different parts of the M4 this morning, causing significant delays for drivers.

There was a crash around the Brynglas Tunnels on the outskirts of Newport in Wales, followed by a second in the same area not long after the first had cleared.

In Wiltshire there was another crash close to junction 16 for Swindon West, causing long tailbacks.
