England vs West Indies, 1st Test Day 2 preview: England will be hoping to pile further misery on West Indies and collect a potentially match-winning first innings lead on the second day of the first Test at Lord’s on Thursday.
The visitors had been bowled out for a paltry 121 on the opening day after they were invited to bat by the Ben Stokes-led Englishmen. Pacer
Gus Atkinson led the way with a haul of 7/45
on Test debut, while the trio of Stokes, James Anderson and Chris Woakes collected a wicket each. Mikyle Louis, making his international debut in this game, top-scored for the West Indians with a knock of 27.
England, in reply, were sitting comfortably at 189/3 at the close of play, thanks primarily to half-centuries from Zak Crawley (76) and Ollie Pope (57).
The first of the three Tests between England and West Indies is significant not just for the hosts but for the sport. Not only is it the first red-ball international fixture in the English home summer, the Lord’s Test also happens to be the final match of pace legend James Anderson’s career.
Anderson had recently become the first pacer in the history of Test cricket to collect 700 or more wickets and will be hoping to surpass late Australian spin legend Shane Warne’s tally of 708 wickets in his farewell game this week.
