History of NFL coaches fired after London losses: Will Jaguars’ Doug Pederson follow Robert Saleh on growing list? | Sporting News

Since the NFL International Series began in 2007, games played outside of the United States have had an incredibly positive impact on the growth of the sport. As great as it’s been for growth, the series has also had an adverse effect on a select few head coaches.

After losing in London in Week 5 of the 2024 season, the Jets decided to part ways with head coach Robert Saleh, the latest NFL head coach to get fired after coming up short across the pond.

The trend has caused fans to turn their eyes to the Jaguars, who fell to 1-5 on the season after losing the first of two consecutive games they will play in London. With Doug Pederson’s seat heating up, he could be the next coach to join the dubious list.

Which NFL coaches have been fired after losing in London? Here is the list of coaches to be fired after losing in London over the past decade.

History of NFL coaches fired after London losses

Saleh is the third NFL head coach to be fired after a London loss in the past decade. He joins Dennis Allen and Joe Philbin on the infamous list.

Allen did not see much success during his time on the sideline in Oakland, going 4-12 in each of his first two seasons. In 2014, the Raiders’ loss to Philbin’s Dolphins at Wembley Stadium to fall to 0-4 would be Allen’s last game as the franchise’s head coach.

Philbin, who took over the Dolphins in 2012, missed the playoffs in each of his first three seasons with the franchise but the fourth was the worst. The 2015 Dolphins fell to 1-3 on the season after a 27-14 loss to the Jets at Wembley Stadium and Philbin was fired.

Season Coach Team Record at firing Record with team
2024 Robert Saleh Jets 2-3 20-36
2015 Joe Philbin Dolphins 1-3 24-28
2014 Dennis Allen Raiders 0-4 8-28

Will the Jaguars fire Doug Pederson?

The Jaguars are 1-5 on the season and Pederson’s job is understandably in jeopardy.

Jacksonville was undisciplined and outmatched in its 35-16 loss to Chicago in Week 6 but it is unclear if or when the franchise would part ways with its head coach.

There is an interesting wrinkle in Pederson’s current situation. The Jaguars will remain in London to take on the Patriots in Week 7, meaning logistical issues could prevent the team from firing its head coach amid a two-week international trip.

While he has led the Jaguars to a playoff victory during his tenure, Pederson’s resume is similar to the other coaches who were fired after a loss in London. Pederson is now 19-21 as Jacksonville’s lead man and the team is looking to avoid a 1-6 start to an already nightmarish 2024 campaign.

Falling to 1-6 could end up being the last straw.
