Holiday travel gets expensive: Airfares hikes for London, Dubai, and Singapore for Christmas & New Year
For those planning an international trip for the Christmas or New Year, you may want to think again. Although these festive occasions are still over a month away, airfares for international flights departing from Hyderabad have already surged drastically.
As per a report by The Times of India (TOI), flight tickets for international destinations from Hyderabad between December 21 and January 1 have increased significantly. This is typically the busiest period for international travel, as schools close for winter vacations and companies offer extended holidays of up to 10 days.
There has been a sharp rise in both domestic and international travel demand. Popular global attractions, such as the Wonderland at Gardens by the Bay in Singapore, the Dubai Shopping Festival, the World Christmas Market, and Christmas Bazaars in Malaysia, have contributed to the increased demand.

Additionally, extravagant celebrations in places like Thailand and Dubai, known for their grand New Year and Christmas festivities, have further amplified the rush. Unsurprisingly, this has led to a surge in airfares to destinations like Singapore, London, Thailand, Malaysia, and Sri Lanka.
The hike in prices has been substantial, with airfares rising two to three times the usual rates. For instance, a flight from Hyderabad to Dubai between December 22 and 24, which typically costs INR 12,000 to INR 16,000, now ranges from INR 18,000 to INR 36,000. Similarly, a flight to London in the first week of January, which would normally cost between INR 40,000 and INR 50,000, now costs a staggering INR 1 lakh to INR 2.4 lakh.
Moreover, countries like Thailand and Malaysia offer visa-free entry for Indian citizens, which further boosts travel demand during this time. This combination of high demand, popular events, and easy access to certain destinations is contributing to the dramatic rise in flight prices.
With Christmas and New Year celebrations still over a month away, it’s absolutely clear that this holiday season will see major changes when it comes to air travel princes, making it a challenging task for many travellers to find affordable flights to their favorite destinations.
