Jerod Mayo calls out Patriots after blowout loss in London: ‘We’re a soft football team’ | Sporting News United Kingdom

Patriots head coach Jerod Mayo and the entire New England club have a long flight back home from across the pond.

The Jaguars rushing attack, led by RB Tank Bigsby, barreled over the Patriots at Wembley Stadium in London on Sunday, leading to a 32-16 victory for Jacksonville. After a strong first quarter by Drake Maye and New England, the defense had no answer for Trevor Lawrence and the Jacksonville offense, falling behind multiple scores by halftime en route to the loss.

With the defeat, New England’s losing streak extends to six games. After upsetting the Bengals in Week 1, the Patriots have yet to find another win in Mayo’s first season as head coach.

Rookie QB Drake Maye has impressed in the last two losing efforts, showing flashes of what he brings to the table as a dynamic quarterback. However, the personnel around him is far from stellar, as there’s a reason why New England sits at 1-6 on the season.

Mayo called out the Patriots after the game, referring to his team as “soft” following the Week 7 loss.

What did Jerod Mayo say about the Patriots?

Mayo did not mince words when given his assessment of his team after the loss to Jacksonville.

The rookie head coach referred to his squad as “soft”, calling out the defense’s inability to stop the run, the offense’s struggling rushing game, and the special teams’ lapse on a punt returned for a touchdown.

“Look, disappointing game,” Mayo said. “Disappointing game. We came out, we started fast. But I would say we’re a soft football team across the board. Talk about what makes a tough football team, it’s being able to run the ball, it’s being able to stop the run, and it’s being able to cover kicks and we did none of those today.”

While the words may have seemed harsh, Maye said after the game it’s not anything the locker room hasn’t heard before. The rookie QB knows the team needs to be better in all facets of the game.

“Coach Mayo’s not gonna come in here and say something he hasn’t said to us in the locker room,” Maye said. “I think we’re not tough and he always preaches being tough.

We’ve gotta man up.”

New England allowed 171 yards on the ground, including 118 and two touchdowns from Tank Bigsby. Meanwhile, the Patriots’ rushing attack managed just 38 total yards, with Rhamondre Stevenson recording just 18 rushing yards on seven carries. Maye matched those 18 yards on three rushes.

Entering Week 7, there were only four teams with one win on the campaign. The Jaguars were one of the four, but now the Patriots sit with the Browns and Rams as team’s still looking for their second victory on the season.

After the lengthy flight from London, the Patriots will regroup for a divisional clash next week against the Jets. New York blew out New England earlier this season with a 24-3 win on “Thursday Night Football” in Week 3.
