Liverpool loanee close to return to fitness as Millwall boss lacking depth for Sheffield Wednesday match
Millwall head coach Alex Neil has confirmed that 19-year-old Calum Scanlon could return to the club as early as next week.
Scanlon, who has played just 11 minutes for the Lions this season due to a back fracture, has been rehabilitating at Liverpool.
“My understanding is that Calum will probably be back within the next week,” said Neil.
“I haven’t met Calum, he’s been doing his rehab at Liverpool. That’s just from conversations that I’ve had loosely behind the scenes, but we do believe he will be back soon. He is making progress.”
Jake Cooper and Danny McNamara, both sidelined with PCL injuries, may also be in contention for Millwall’s upcoming FA Cup match against Dagenham & Redbridge.
Neil is cautiously optimistic about their availability.
“I think they’ll have a chance for that one,” he said. “I wouldn’t rule them out for that just yet.”
The Lions head to Sheffield Wednesday on Saturday and Neil acknowledged that his squad remains stretched, with few options to rotate players.
“The difficulty is who we’ve got and who is going to be available, if I’m honest,” he admitted.
“It’s not really a case of chopping and changing. We don’t really have a lot of changes to make. If you look at the depth of the squad at the moment, even the bench today, I’d have liked to have freshened up another couple of areas if I could, but we are quite stretched just now.”
