London police board appoints acting deputy chief after medical leave

A London police superintendent has been appointed to temporarily fill the void left after one of the city’s three deputy chiefs took a medical leave last month.

Supt. Scott Guilford has been named the new acting deputy police chief, police board chair Ali Chahbar said.

“He will assume his role effective immediately,” Chahbar said.

Guilford will be filling in for deputy Trish McIntyre, one of three senior officers to go off on medical leave last month.

The loss of McIntyre and the two other high-ranking officers – a superintendent and an inspector – came less than two weeks after the firing of the three most-senior civilian police staffers. The directors of legal, human resources and finance were terminated in May following an internal review carried out to find efficiencies and help modernize the force, Chahbar said in an email to all police employees.

The senior leadership team, made up of Truong and three deputies, was to oversee the three affected departments on an interim basis.

Truong previously addressed the loss of McIntyre and the other senior officers, saying it would have an impact on the organization but wouldn’t affect the force’s ability to serve the community.

“The three senior officers that are temporarily off right now are very important to us, but we have an organization that doesn’t stop policing because people are off,” he said at the time.

Guilford, who will take over McIntyre’s special units portfolio, will appear publicly for the first time in his new role at the next police board meeting on June 20.

London has two other deputy police chiefs: Treena MacSween, who oversees administration, and Paul Bastien, who handles operations.
