Major route to Gatwick Airport has long delays after vehicle fire

One of the main routes to Gatwick Airport has seen closures and delays all morning after the road surface was damaged by a vehicle fire.

The fire was first reported at about 5.40am on the M23 southbound between junction 8 for the M25 and 9 for the airport.

Various lane closures have come in and out of effect throughout the morning, while traffic officers try to clean up and repair the damage caused by the fire.

Right now three out of four lanes are closed, with the outside lane running past the scene of the fire.

About one-and-a-half miles of congestion has built up, causing delays for drivers and potentially impacting anyone hoping to catch a flight from Gatwick Airport.

Meanwhile on the Underground, the Piccadilly line is partly closed between Rayners Lane and Uxbridge again, after being suspended throughout the day yesterday.

This is due to ‘poor rail conditions caused by significant leaf fall’.
