Moldova votes to join the EU – London Business News | Londonlovesbusiness.com
Moldova which borders Ukraine has voted to join the European Union by the tiniest of margins during a referendum.
On Monday afternoon the votes were counted, and official data shows 50.46% voted Yes and 49.54% voted No, the Moldovan electoral commission reported.
Moldovan President Maia Sandu, who is pro-EU, failed to win the election outright, she will now face pro-Russian Party of Socialists on 3 November.
Sandu said that pro-EU supporters won the first round during a “difficult fight,” the Moldovan President also said it was “unjust.”
On Sunday Sandu said there has been foreign interference in Moldovan politics for the country to join the EU, she did not mention or directly accuse Russia.
However, Kremlin spokesman, Dmitry Peskov said that she will have to provide “evidence” over the claims of foreign interference.
EU spokesperson Peter Stano said on Monday voting to join the EU had taken place “under unprecedented interference and intimidation by Russia and its proxies.”
