Moment football fans turn the sky red in London as flares and fireworks are set off in the streets seemingly to mark crunch football clash

The skies over Finsbury Park in London turned an eerie red on Sunday night, as a crowd of dozens marched along the streets while chanting and letting off flares and fireworks.

Videos posted on X, formerly known as Twitter, show a crowd in high spirits and surrounded by rising smoke caused by the flares.

Speculation was rife on the social media platform as to the reason behind the unusual and raucous display.

Some suggested they may have been Belarussian separatists, given that they were waving red and white flags.

However, others were quick to point out that the red and white flags may simply have been signalling support for the colours of CR Belouizdad, an Algerian football team that plays in red and white kits.

Also known as CRB, the team was last night playing USM Alger in the Algerian Cup.

The match ended 0-0, leading to a penalty shoot out resulting in CRB winning 3-1.

While seemingly chaotic, the participants were mostly in celebratory spirits and sang along while passing cars sounded their horns.

Finsbury Park is home to the capital’s largest Algerian population and is affectionately known by locals as ‘Little Algiers’.
