NFL 2024 Preview Week 5
The fifth week of the 2024 NFL season sees the first bye weeks of the year, along with the return to London. There are several key games, such as the Bills at Houston and Cincinnati vs Baltimore.
All-in-all, it’s not a bad week of professional football despite a couple of fewer games this week. The NFL Week 5 bye week teams are Philadelphia, Los Angeles Chargers, Tennessee and Detroit. The NFL 2024 preview Week 5 will run down the schedule.
This one probably isn’t the most exciting game of the week, but it’s a decent matchup between a pair of NFC South foes. The NFL spreads Week 5 have the Falcons favored by 3, which means oddsmakers are expecting Kirk Cousins to have an immediate impact.
It’s quite possible he does, although that’s not always the way to bet. Tampa Bay needs a little more production from the offense in order to take pressure off of the defense. It’s possible, but the under is probably the way to go.
Jets vs Vikings (London)
Day/Time:
Odds: New York -4
Total: 44.5
Aaron Rodgers faces his old nemesis the Minnesota Vikings in London. The Vikings have a big question mark at quarterback, although they’re in better shape than they were after Cousins was injured last season. The Jets need Rodgers to stay healthy this season in order to keep up with Buffalo and Miami.
The Jets do have Buffalo on tap. That, along with the typical distractions of playing in London, could make it hard for New York to be at the top of its game. The NFL spreads are about what was expected for this game, but the Vikings +4 looks to offer the most value.
The last two No. 1 overall NFL draft picks meet in this game, as Bryce Young leads the Panthers to Chicago. It’s been a struggle for Young and the Panthers were last in passing yards a year ago. He has to do better, but he also needs more help from his teammates.
That’s something he didn’t always get last season. Caleb Williams looks to have all the tools for the Bears, but you could have said the same thing about Young entering last season.
Some quarterbacks will go through some growing pains. The NFL point spreads for Week 5 have the Bears as 5.5-point favorites, which isn’t easy to lay with a rookie quarterback.
Bills vs Texans
Day/Time:
Odds: Houston -1.5
Total: 48
The NFL 2024 preview week 5 shows one of the best games of the week, as Buffalo visits Houston. The Bills are coming off a game with Baltimore and have the Jets up next. That should come into play, however, as the Texans should be a squad teams want to bring their ‘A’ game against.
Houston is coming off a key game with Jacksonville, but shouldn’t suffer any sort of letdown. That could be a possibility against New England next week. Right now, the Bills in a teaser doesn’t look too bad if you want to play this game.
This is one of those games that could spell trouble for the Browns. Cleveland has Philadelphia, Cincinnati and Baltimore coming up, so you could forgive them if they look past the Commanders. That might not be so easy if Jayden Daniels lives up the preseason hype, however.
He’s earned rave reviews from teammates and his coaching staff, but you can’t expect anything different. The NFL scores and odds on this one will be interesting. It wouldn’t be a shock to see the Commanders win and Washington gets the early lean.
Ravens vs Bengals
Day/Time:
Odds: Cincinnati -1.5
Total: 46.5
This could very well be the best game of the NFL Week 5 matchups. You know what you’re going to get with the Ravens. The Bengals are counting on a return to health by Joe Burrow.
The Bengals have been highly regarded in all of the early point spreads and this game is no exception. It should be a typical AFC North battle between two very good football teams. This one is another case where taking the underdog in a teaser – it makes some sense!
Colts vs Jaguars
Day/Time:
Odds: Jacksonville -2.5
Total: 47
The NFL 2024 preview week 5 has the NFL odds being a little bit on the low side in this game. The problem is with Jacksonville’s brutal early season schedule, the line in October could be even less. The Jaguars could very well be 1-4 entering this game due to the competition it faces.
The Colts are an NFL team that has had its share of questions entering the season. Anthony Richardson didn’t look bad when he played, but he didn’t play that much. The Jaguars -2.5 are likely the right side in this one.
The NFL Week 5 odds appear to be a little bit low here, as Miami was 3-0 ATS as a road favorite last season. The Dolphins weren’t nearly as good as a road underdog, so Miami needs to win road games when it has the opportunity.
That should be the case here. New England could be in for a couple of more disappointing seasons before things get better. The Dolphins have to be considered the right side here.
Cardinals vs 49ers
Day/Time:
Odds: San Francisco – 9.5
Total: 47
The 49ers are going to be a popular play in the NFL Week 5 confidence picks, as San Francisco is the biggest favorite of the week. The point spread is a little bit on the high side here, which makes betting the game a bit tough.
Kyler Murray is a solid quarterback and will throw for some yards, but Arizona could have a tough time stopping the San Francisco rushing attack. The 49ers don’t really have any incentive to run up the score here and have the Thursday night game for Week 6 up next against Seattle. There really isn’t a lot of value on the side or total of this game.
This one isn’t one of the more exciting games on the schedule this week, but at least it looks to be evenly matched. The Raiders really struggled away from home, but this is a winnable game for them. Las Vegas can’t rely on just a good home record if it hopes to advance to the postseason.
The Broncos are going through some changes, which could help in the long run, but might have any immediate impact. Denver is still a tough place for road teams to win at. The NFL Week 5 betting trends show Denver is just 7-12 ATS as a home favorite since the start of the 2021 season.
Packers vs Rams
Day/Time:
Odds: Los Angeles -1.5
Total: 48.5
Not a bad game here, as the Packers visit the Los Angeles Rams. Green Bay is the third decent team to be getting 1.5 points, which is ideal for teaser NFL players. Green Bay’s defense is good enough to keep the Packers in games, which is really all teaser bettors would need in this one.
The offense scores enough points to keep it close. The Rams are a little bit of a question mark coming into the year. They should challenge for a wild card spot if things go according to plan. One of the tougher NFL matchups on the schedule this week.
Seattle appears to be a decent choice in the NFL Week 5 picks straight-up, checking in a 3.5-point favorites. The Giants had their share of quarterbacking problems last year and it remains to be seen what kind of play they’ll get this season.
The Seahawks likely won’t challenge the 49ers for the division title, but should be in the mix for an NFL playoff berth. This is the type of game it can’t afford to lose, so you have to lean to the home favorite in this one.
This one isn’t a bad game for the Sunday night contest, as the Cowboys visit the Steelers. Few teams have gotten more out of less than Pittsburgh over the past few seasons. Mike Tomlin is highly regarded, but still underrated by the betting public.
Dallas should have another strong season, and are tied for No. 8 in the Super Bowl odds at +1800. That’s not the worst futures bet you could make entering the season. Pittsburgh is a longshot at +4000, primarily due to the division it plays in. Some people will use the Steelers in teasers with a few of the other 1.5-point underdogs.
Saints vs Chiefs
Day/Time:
Odds: Kansas City -8
Total: 44.5
The NFL 2024 preview Week 5 ends with the New Orleans Saints visiting the defending Super Bowl champion Chiefs. It looks as though the oddsmakers have caught on to Kansas City being an under team. Chiefs totals are a little bit lower than expected in most games this season.
Laying more than a touchdown to New Orleans isn’t the most appealing play here, although the ability to tease the Chiefs to -2 will be too much to pass up for some bettors.
Kansas City is 9-21 in totals when a home favorite, dating back to the start of the 2021 season when you include the playoffs. The number is a bit low, but the under makes some sense for an NFL Week 5 over under play.
