From 1 January private schools have increased fees which far exceeds what the Labour government had predicted.

The Prime Minister’s controversial decision to place a 205 VAT on private schools was supposed to have helped to boost the state sector that would help to hire more teachers.

The Treasury suggested in October that fees would increase by 10%, an analysis by the Telegraph found that half of 964 private schools across the UK will raise fees from 15% and fifth will see fees soar by 20%.

Critics have turned on the government warning that this will not “help state schools” and this will add further pressure on the education system.

Reform UK leader Nigel Farage said, “I think it is a tax on aspiration. I think the policy is short-sighted. It will damage children. We have so many problems in our education system. Labour are attacking the one part of it which is a success.”

Conservative shadow education secretary Laura Trott stating: “This rise in VAT will do nothing to help state schools.

The Labour Government is disrupting thousands of children’s education vindictively in the middle of the school year, and all it will do will add pressure to the education system.

It will be pupils, parents and teachers from the state sector that will end up paying the price.

The Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson warned, “High and rising standards cannot just be for families who can afford them, and we must build an education system where every child can achieve and thrive.”
