Rishi Sunak has appeared outside No. 10 Downing Street and has said he gave the “job my all” and said it has been a “difficult day” as he has resigned.
Sunak has confirmed that he will resign as the Conservative leader although this will not happen “immediately,” but only when a replacement leader has been appointed.
Sunak said, “Following this result, I will step down as party leader, not immediately, but once the formal arrangements for selecting my successor are in place.
The former Prime Minister said he is “sorry” and that he gave the job his “all” he added, but voters have “sent a clear signal that the government of the United Kingdom must change.”
He said he has heard your “anger” and “disappointment” of the voters across the country and take responsibility for losing the general election.
He described the Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer as a “decent, public spirited man” who will take over as the UK’s new Prime Minister.
Sunak said, “Whatever our disagreements in this campaign, he is a decent, public spirited man who I respect.”
The former Prime Minister said Sir Keir and his family “deserve the very best of our understanding as they make the huge transition to their new lives.”
