Women’s cross-country Mustangs win Ontario title

The nationally top-ranked Western women’s cross-country team repeated as Ontario university champions with a dominant performance this past weekend at Osprey Links Golf Course in Callander.

Ashley Maguire (28 minutes, 51.5 seconds) and Olivia Roussel (28:51.7) reached the podium in second and third respectively while Sandra Guga (28:56.2), Anna Carruthers (28:59.0) and Erika Jordan (29:03.7) finished fifth through seventh.

The Mustangs’ top five finishers accounted for 23 points while silver-medalist Queen’s had a team total of 65.

“They put themselves in the lead pack and just kept supporting each other to stay in the hunt,” Western head coach Guy Schultz said. “When the race broke open in the last (two kilometres), they all responded and stormed home with all five scorers being among the first team (OUA) all-stars.”

The Mustangs men finished fourth and Ben Fox was named a second-team all star. The nationals will be held in British Columbia Nov. 9.

London Beefeaters season over

The London Beefeaters’ season came to an end with a 75-39 loss to the unbeaten St. Clair Saints in the Ontario Football Conference title game this past weekend on the road.

The Beefs, who pounded Quinte 65-7 in the semifinal a week earlier, finished with a 7-3 overall record with all three defeats to St. Clair.

London running back LJ Dyer, receiver Nick Szigeti and linemen Jake Deneau and Ameen Fattali made the OFC offensive all-star team while lineman Noah Williams and defensive backs Aidan Wallace Blackwell and Semi Taiwo earned defensive honours. Brayden Rivard of the Beefeaters was the OFC’s all-star punter.

Ball hall appraisal events

The Canadian baseball hall of fame & museum will team up with Heritage Auctions for two appraisal events Wednesday, Nov. 6 and Thursday, Nov. 7 in St. Marys.

Visitors can have up to three sports items reviewed and appraised by an expert for a $10 donation, which also includes admission to the museum. The hall of fame appraisal events will run Nov. 6 from 6-9 p.m. and Nov. 7 from 12-3 p.m.

Heritage Auctions is one of the largest sports collectibles auction houses in the world. Any sports item from all major pursuits, including hockey, can be appraised but the expert on hand will be well-versed in game-worn jerseys, game-used equipment, vintage sports cards and autographed items.

Fanshawe Falcons runners soar

The Fanshawe College men’s cross country team won the Ontario collegiate provincial championship this past weekend in King City and Matt Talbot ran to the individual gold medal.

The Ailsa Craig native finished the course in 26 minutes, 43 seconds and marked his fifth straight first-place finish this season. He was named the OCAA men’s rookie of the year.

Teammate Ethan Roche, a Londoner, was third in 27:50 and Ty Breedon (Barrie) was fifth to put three Falcons on the collegiate All-Ontario first team. Owen Wrigley of St. Marys was 10th to earn second-team honours.

The Fanshawe women ran to a third-place finish.

Falcons coach Regan Ryter was named OCAA cross country coach of the year. The team will head to nationals Nov. 9 at St. Clair College in Windsor.
