TfL announces £80 million funding for safer streets and improved bus journey times – Harrow Online

Transport for London (TfL) has announced the availability of £80 million in funding to help boroughs enhance road safety and improve bus services. The funding, revealed on 18 July, includes up to £50 million over the next three years for significant safety improvements and £30 million for transformational bus infrastructure in three selected boroughs.

London’s 33 boroughs, including Harrow, which manage around 95% of the city’s streets, are crucial partners in ensuring these areas are safe, accessible, and reliable for all users. This initiative supports the Mayor’s Vision Zero goal of eliminating deaths and serious injuries on the transport network, while also promoting safer and more active travel options within local communities.

The funding complements the £80.4 million allocated to boroughs in the 2024/25 Local Implementation Plan, aiming to continue essential improvements for road safety and public transport usability.

TfL’s £50 million fund for Borough Safer Streets will support projects aimed at reducing speeds and addressing the city’s most dangerous roads and junctions. Eligible projects can receive between £0.5 million and £5 million.

Examples of qualifying projects include:

  • Initiatives to reduce speeding and decrease the risk and severity of collisions
  • Improvements to protect vulnerable road users and enhance safety for pedestrians and cyclists
  • Safety enhancements in high-risk locations

TfL’s £30 million Better Bus Partnerships programme will also provide up to £10 million each to three boroughs. This funding will support improvements such as new bus priority measures, better roadwork management to reduce bus delays, upgraded stops and stations, and enhancements to streets to facilitate easier access to bus stops.

Penny Rees, TfL’s Head of Healthy Streets Investment, stated: “We are delighted to announce two new funding opportunities available to boroughs to continue their vital work improving road safety and investing in bus priority and bus infrastructure.

“Working closely with London’s boroughs is central to achieving a cleaner, greener and healthier London by reducing road danger, improving air quality and encouraging active travel. We look forward to working closely with the boroughs to deliver projects that make our city greener, safer and better for everyone.”
