Travel chaos with eight major train networks hit by ‘nationwide fault’

Major train companies are suffering from delays amid a ‘nationwide fault’ affecting National Rail.

Gatwick Express, Great Northern, Southern, Thameslink, Southeastern, South Western Railway and Scotrail trains have all been hit by delays, cancellations and tweaked timetables. Routes to Heathrow Airport via the Elizabeth line have also been impacted.

To blame is an issue with an onboard radio system between train drivers and signal operators called GSMR.

National Rail said: ‘Trains across the network are having to start their journeys later because of this fault and some may also be subject to cancellations or alterations.’

The morning has already been bad for commuters. Several key London Underground and Overground lines have been smacked by a double-whammy of closures and delays.

Which lines are affected?

Southern, Thameslink, Great Northern and Gatwick Express trains may be subject to delays of up to 15 minutes this morning. Some may run at different times or be cancelled altogether.

All journeys on Southeastern are similarly held up.

Elizabeth line trains serving between Reading and Heathrow Airport have also been hit by the technical issue, according to National Rail. TfL currently displays ‘good service’ on the line.

ScotRail travellers can use their tickets for any other ‘reasonable route’ to get to where they need to go. The operator is recording ‘minor disruption’ on all 36 of its routes.

However, South Western Railway users can’t do so if they want to use their tickets to board a bus and should check Traveline to be on the safe side. Only a few SWR services have been impacted, with only major disruption to South Hampshire Locals.

TfL travel update

Two Underground and two Overground lines have been hobbled today by everything from signal failures and track issues to too many leaves on the railways.

Piccadilly:

  • Part closure: No service between Rayners Court and Uxbridge due to ‘significant leaf fall’.
  • Minor delays: Shrotage of trains causing longer journeys between Acton Town and Rayners Lane.

Northern:

  • Part closure: No trains between Finchkey Central and Mill Hill Heast because of a faulty train.,
  • Minor delays: Emergency engineering works will mean some hold-ups between Camden Town and High Barnet.

Overground, Sufragette:

  • Severe delays: A faulty track on Gospel Oak means longer journeys between Stratford and Willesden Junction.

Overground, Mildmay:

  • Part suspended: No service between Stratford and Willesden Junction while engineers fix a track fault.
  • Severe delays: On the rest of the line.
